How Photography By Gagan Has Redefined Luxury Destination Weddings With His Human-First Approach

Most people map out their careers. Gagan Sharma’s trajectory unfolded almost instinctively. His journey began with a camera gifted by his mother turned into a journey that would eventually take him across the world, documenting some of the most emotionally rich weddings. “My mother bought me my first digital camera and said, ‘I hope this isn’t just another one of your hobbies’,” he recalls. It wasn’t.

The real pivotal point came unexpectedly in 2008, when he was asked to step in for a wedding photographer just days before the event. “I was nervous, but I went for it and I loved it. That was the moment something clicked,” he says. What followed was not a calculated rise, but a steady evolution driven by instinct and an innate understanding of people.

Today, Photography By Gagan stands as one of the most respected names in luxury wedding photography, known for images that feel human rather than overly constructed. His work travels seamlessly across the UK and global destinations, yet remains rooted in a singular philosophy. “I’m a people photographer. Everything comes back to connection,” he says. In a world saturated with visual excess, his approach is to simplify. “It’s about what I take away, not what I add. I focus on moments that feel still, honest and real.”

The Emotional Signature

Gagan’s visual language sits somewhere between editorial elegance and emotional minimalism. “For me, it’s editorial, mysterious, elegant but above all human,” he explains. Rather than chasing perfection, he looks for clarity within chaos. “I’m not chasing one perfect frame. I’m observing many moments, but waiting for that one where emotion exists naturally, without distraction.”

First meetings with a couple goes far beyond mood boards or briefs. “I want to know how they met, what matters to them, what their family dynamic is, what makes them ick,” he says. This emotional mapping informs his visual narrative, ensuring each wedding feels personal rather than prescribed. “Once you understand that, you’re not creating something generic. It becomes an extension of who they are.”

His process begins months in advance, shaping timelines and flow in a way that reflects the couple’s rhythm rather than imposing structure. “On the day, I’m not forcing moments. I’m capturing what unfolds naturally,” he says. The final body of work is approached like cinema. “Even if you see just a part of the story, you should be able to feel everything else around it.”

Destination With Intention

Destination weddings are where Gagan’s approach finds its fullest expression. With extensive experience across continents, he brings a measured, thoughtful lens to unfamiliar settings. “People and emotion always come first. That never changes,” he says. What does change is how he responds to the environment.

“I do a lot of research on the culture, location, logistics. I need to understand the place before, so I can integrate it into the story,” he explains. From navigating time zones to understanding movement between venues, preparation becomes essential to preserving spontaneity. “Understanding how the day flows is crucial. It allows everything to feel seamless.”

When it comes to multi-day, multi-cultural weddings, he builds continuity. “I treat each event is a chapter, but ensure they all connect.” From intimate gatherings to larger celebrations, the focus remains on people, emotion and cohesion.

Tips & Tricks: What Couples Often Miss

Space for Real Moments

“One of the biggest mistakes is stacking events too tightly,” he says. Without breathing room, weddings can feel rushed and disconnected. “You need time for people to relax, to feel, to be present. That’s where the best moments happen.”

Follow the Light

Lighting is central to his work. “Warmth is everything. Love, visually, is warmth. I also strive to understand the light. I do my due diligence about sunrise, sunset, and golden hour, which can completely transform how a wedding is captured. It makes a huge difference.”

Beyond Deliverables

Beyond deliverables, he urges couples to focus on emotional alignment. “Ask your photographer how they feel about your wedding. That connection shapes the outcome more than anything else.”

The Future of Wedding Photography

Return to Authenticity

Speaking of 2026 trends, he notes a growing return to film photography and authenticity. “Film photography is coming back,” he notes. In an era of AI and digital overload, there is a renewed appreciation for imperfection. “People are craving something real, tangible and honest.”

Delayed Gratification

At the same time, he remains cautious of fleeting trends. “Content created for instant gratification doesn’t hold long-term value,” he says. “Weddings are all about meaning and memories. They deserve something that lasts beyond 24 hours.”

Unscripted Moments

What truly sets destination weddings apart are the unscripted moments. “The journey, the plane ride, the bus, the laughter on the side of the road. That’s where the real story lives,” he shares. These in-between moments often become the most enduring images, precisely because they are unplanned and felt.
