Floating between a 10-million-year-old rainforest and the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, Langkawi has all the ingredients of a romantic honeymoon. Beyond its postcard-perfect beaches, this 99-island archipelago’s UNESCO-protected landscapes reveal ancient limestone formations, secluded beaches and island-hopping adventures waiting to be explored with your darling. Unlike some of Southeast Asia’s more frenetic beach destinations, Langkawi has mastered the art of slowing everything down. No one seems to be in a hurry, and just a few hours after landing, neither was I.
It was against this impossibly idyllic backdrop that I checked into The St. Regis Langkawi, where every detail, from the warm welcome to the spectacular setting, signalled that this was no ordinary island escape.
The journey sets the tone
The resort sits just 25 minutes from Langkawi International Airport, although it feels considerably further from civilisation in the best possible way. Our transfer meandered past sleepy fishing villages, roadside fruit stalls, coconut palms and tiny kampungs before arriving at the resort’s striking entrance. It isn’t one of those flashy arrivals designed for Instagram but to ease you into island life.
The architecture follows the same philosophy. Inspired by traditional Malay design, the low-rise pavilions, pitched roofs and open-air walkways sit comfortably within the landscape instead of competing with it. There are no towering hotel blocks. Everything feels deliberately pared-down, allowing the surroundings to steal the show.
Suite setting
The biggest surprise? The resort never actually felt like… a resort. Instead of endless corridors and anonymous hotel rooms, the accommodation has the atmosphere of an elegant private estate. It’s warm, intimate and residential. I stayed in the St. Regis Pool Suite. Just after entering, I’d mentally cancelled every plan I’d made to explore Langkawi. The private plunge pool became my favourite address.
Morning coffee on the terrace soon turned into lazy afternoons with a book, followed by sunset swims before dinner. Inside, the suite strikes a balance between contemporary luxury and Malaysian craftsmanship. Dark timber accents, curated artwork, oversized marble bathrooms and generous living spaces make it somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time rather than simply sleeping. The highlight was the legendary St. Regis Butler Service. Luggage disappeared and reappeared unpacked. Evening clothes were magically pressed before dinner. Baths could be drawn while I was at breakfast. It wasn’t like typical hotel service but like someone ensuring everything ran exactly as it should.
For honeymooners celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime trip, however, I’d encourage one serious splurge. Book the Sunset Overwater Villa. Suspended above tranquil waters, it pairs complete privacy with an infinity pool, oversized sun deck and panoramic sunset views.
Epicurean escape
Dining proved every bit as memorable as the stay. Breakfast alone deserves an award for convincing guests they’ll “just have some fruit” before somehow ending up with pastries, tropical juices, noodles, eggs, Malaysian specialities and several coffees. L’Orangerie became a favourite for elegant dinners overlooking the Andaman Sea, blending contemporary French cooking with subtle Asian influences. For relaxed lunches, Pantai Grill delivers what every beach holiday needs: beautifully grilled seafood, premium steaks and sea breeze.
The Gourmand Deli became my dangerous afternoon habit thanks to its buttery pastries and freshly baked breads, while The Decanter is where wine lovers could happily lose an entire evening exploring an impressive cellar. Naturally, no stay at a St. Regis is complete without a Lang Mary. Think of it as the resort’s glamorous answer to the Bloody Mary, inspired by local flavours and best enjoyed just before sunset.
Sunset indulgence
If you’re only booking one special dinner, make it Kayuputi. Suspended dramatically above the Andaman Sea, the overwater restaurant is designed like an elegant art collector’s beach house. It is complete with reclaimed timber, curated artworks and panoramic sea views that become increasingly spectacular at sunset. Designed by Bill Bensley, the space itself is almost as unforgettable as the food.
I’d recommend arriving early. The Pavilion Bar is the perfect excuse to order cocktails while watching the sky slowly turn every imaginable shade of peach, amber and pink before moving inside for dinner. Chef Marco Portal’s menus celebrate Asian flavours through refined modern techniques and thoughtfully sourced seasonal ingredients. I opted for the House of Astor Degustation, a seven-course journey that managed to surprise with every plate. It began with beautifully crafted amuse-bouches before moving through confit duck terrine with foie gras, an unexpectedly brilliant Cameron corn soup, butter-seared scallops and the restaurant’s signature Perak dry-aged duck. The finale was every bit as spectacular, with banana turon feuille followed by a wonderfully refreshing Asam Chewit dessert built around lime and honey.
If seven courses feel slightly ambitious after a lazy afternoon by the pool, the Flavor Odyssey offers a shorter four-course experience. Highlights include Hokkaido scallop ceviche, Asam Pedas risotto featuring spiny lobster and blue belly shrimp, followed by either Perak dry-aged duck or Atlantic cod before ending with Cacao Sabah, a sophisticated chocolate dessert paired with toasted rice ice cream. Whichever menu you choose, come hungry. And leave plenty of time afterwards simply to admire the view.
Relax and rejuvenate
Spa menus often promise the world. The St. Regis Spa actually delivers. Hidden amongst tropical gardens, the spa immediately slows your pulse. Couples can book private treatment suites for bespoke wellness rituals inspired by local botanicals and traditional healing techniques. I chose the Hot Stone Massage, and I’m almost certain every knot I’d accumulated from airport lounges, long-haul flights and far too much laptop time surrendered. Warm basalt stones glided across tired muscles while expertly judged pressure released tension I hadn’t even realised I was carrying. By the end, I floated back to my suite.
Honeymooners dream
