Manthan Mayfair is the Indian restaurant in London that makes you feel the celebration before you even taste the food. Set behind an elegant façade on the ultra-trendy Maddox Street, it brings together bold Indian flavours and fine-dining finesse in a vibrant, welcoming setting. Aptly named, Manthan means “to churn and reflect”, the restaurant does exactly that, reworking India’s regional, seasonal and soulful cuisines through a contemporary lens. Expect fragrant spices and native techniques presented with confident precision, where every dish invites conversation. What truly makes Manthan a must for special occasions is its rare ability to please everyone at the table. Whether marking an anniversary, hosting an intimate pre-wedding gathering or simply dressing up dinner “just because,” the experience feels indulgent yet refreshingly unpretentious.

At the heart of Manthan is Chef Patron Rohit Ghai, a name that carries serious goodwill in London’s dining circles. His legacy is formidable. From earning a Michelin star at Jamavar in under a year to shaping kitchens like Gymkhana, Trishna and Hoppers, his culinary journey spans continents and accolades. Yet at Manthan, his cooking feels deeply personal. Drawing from his Punjabi roots and his travels through Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, Rohit brings “the real India home” through flavours inspired by bustling markets, family recipes and time-honoured techniques. His style balances precision with emotion using classic Indian methods that he has refined through years in global professional kitchens. The result is dishes that are delicious and familiar. Co-Founder Abhi Sangwan brings his expertise to a comprehensive drinks menu.
The central, posh and effortlessly accessible location only adds to the allure. Step in, and the ambience immediately sets the tone. The interiors are outfitted with sleek dark wood, polished marble, jewel-toned seating and a statement central bar. The design encourages socialising, whether you’re perched at the bar for cocktails or settling into a candlelit table for an indulgent meal.
The culinary offerings

When it comes to the food, Manthan truly shines. The menu reads like a curated journey across India. Appetisers are playful and packed with personality. Relish Artichoke Tikki, crisp and golden with pickle and strawberry chutney; or Fish Recheado, where grilled sea bass is highlight with bold Goan spices.

Street-food-inspired chaats, from Pyaaz Kachori to Fish Malvani, are unmissable. We went with the delicious Samosa Chaat and Lamb Ghee Roast. Those who’d like to keep a tab on the calories without compromising flavour must try the Chatpata Chops and Tikkas. We tried the Soya Chaap and Lamb Chops and both were absolute delights. The sharing plates make it easy to graze with friends and family.

Mains are soulful and deeply satisfying. Bharli Vangi, baby aubergines stuffed with poppy seeds and black spices, is a standout for vegetarians, while the Beef Stew Idiyappam paired with coconut and Southern spices offers comfort with finesse. We didn’t miss the timeless favourites like Chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer Butter Masala and Fish Curry, each an explosion of flavours. Grills and curries sit confidently side by side, designed to be mixed, matched and shared. Pair the mains with dal, roti options or rice.

Desserts keep things decadent yet nostalgic. Aam Malai, a mango-led celebration of summer and Anjeer Kheer, a chilled fig and pistachio rice pudding, are perfect to end on a sweet note. Seasonal spring-summer dishes introduced by the kitchen lean into freshness and fruit, making them absolute must-tries when the weather warms.
Palates and preferences

Manthan also caters beautifully to different palates and preferences. From the Charita Signature tasting menu to the Pavitra Vegetarian option, you can experience multiple regions on a single table. Vegan, gluten-free and custom requests are handled with ease, making it inclusive without ever feeling compromised.

Cocktails are as thoughtfully crafted as the food. The concoctions are inspired by the world’s seven oceans, blending exotic fruits, botanicals and house infusions to create each drink inventive and Instagrammable. Expect everything from refined classics with an Indian twist to playful signatures designed for long evenings and second rounds. There’s also an extensive wine list and non-alcoholic options.
Milestone moments

Equally impressive is the warm and attentive service. The knowledgeable staff will guide you through menus and pairings with genuine enthusiasm, making first-timers feel at ease and regulars feel remembered. With an intimate 40-guest capacity, Manthan is also ideal for private dining and bespoke events, perfect for stylish pre-wedding celebrations, anniversaries or exclusive gatherings.
