10 Bollywood Couples Who Ditched That Big Fat Indian Wedding To Get Married At Home

When you think of celebrity weddings, visions of palatial venues, over-the-top lehengas, guest lists that read like film credits and paparazzi-packed extravaganzas conjure up instantly. But several stars tread the unexpected path down the aisle, choosing to tie the knot in an intimate home wedding. Whether it was a conscious decision for privacy, intimacy or just a shift in priorities, they traded spectacle for sincerity, lavish lawns for living rooms and red carpets for close-knit family and friends. Their ceremonies, rooted in meaning, not magnitude, served as a reminder that, despite the acclaim and access, weddings are ultimately about the union of two people in love.

From Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor to Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Anand Ahuja, here’s a gallery of stars who said “I do” under the comfort and magic of their own roof.

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Anand Ahuja

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Anand Ahuja’s wedding in May 2018 was the perfect blend of tradition and understated glamour. While many expected the Bollywood fashion icon to host a grand destination affair, the couple surprised everyone by choosing a far more personal venue for their big day—Sonam’s aunt’s heritage bungalow Rockdale in Mumbai.  The wedding was attended by family members including the entire Kapoor khandaan comprising Boney Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Khushi and Jhanvi Kapoor, among other friends from the fraternity.

The Anand Karaj ceremony was held in a serene setting that emulated a Gurudwara and accented by lush floral décor along with influences from Jaipur. Sonam wore a stunning red and gold lehenga by Anuradha Vakil paired with heirloom jewellery, while Anand complemented her in a classic ivory and gold sherwani.

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor

Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s wedding was a refreshing departure from the usual celebrity fanfare. It was a quiet celebration of intimacy and intention. The couple chose to get married at their Mumbai home, Vastu, in April 2022. Their reason? To keep things sentimental and symbolic. According to Alia, Vastu wasn’t just a residence, it’s where “we’ve spent the last 5 years of our relationship.” It was a place where their relationship blossomed and where countless memories were made.

The duo, both dressed in ivory Sabyasachi outfits and surrounded by just 40 of their closest family and friends, exchanged their vows on their balcony. The space was bathed in golden sunlight and was adorned with white blooms done by Interflora India.

Athiya Shetty and KL Rahul

Athiya Shetty and KL Rahul’s wedding on January 23, 2023, was a thoughtfully intimate affair hosted at the bride’s father Suniel Shetty’s scenic farmhouse in Khandala. Nestled amid lush hills and serene gardens, the home named Jahaan became a beautiful backdrop for their union. Choosing to celebrate at home allowed the couple to blend cherished memories with heartfelt ceremony.

The decorations, crafted by Rani Pink Love, leaned heavily on fresh flowers. The actual wedding setup was decked up in serene white jasmine and mogra strings hung across ancient trees, beds of fragrant petals flanking seating areas, and touches of soft mint linens in brocade textures under natural light. For the big day, Athiya for an old-rose hued lehenga by Anamika Khanna bearing the couturier’s signature zardozi and jaali work, while KL wore a pastel sherwani from the same couturier.

Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar

Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar’s wedding on 19 February 2022 was a pared-down celebration nestled in the lush surroundings of Farhan’s family farmhouse, Sukoon, in Khandala. The venue is also Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi’s country retreat. They chose to marry at home to ensure emotional resonance, anchoring their vows in the space where so many memories lived.

The décor by ALTAIR by Janki Desai was a dreamy blend of florals and natural elegance. A lavish floral arch of red, pink, and yellow roses framed their vow exchange under an open tree canopy, while chandeliers, earthy elements, and pastel linens draped across the lawn amplified the magic of the setting. Much like the unconventional setting, Shibani eschewed traditional lehenga in favour of custom corset with a flowing skirt and dramatic veil by JADE by Monica and Karishma. Farhan looked dashing in a tailored black tuxedo by Govinda Mehta.

Prateik Smita Patil and Priya Banerjee

Poignant, grounded and heartfelt, Prateik Smita Patil and Priya Banerjee’s ethereal wedding took place on Valentine’s Day 2025 in the beloved Bandra home of his late mother, legendary actress Smita Patil, called Rock Cliff. The couple chose this deeply personal venue based on a powerful dream Priya experienced, where Smita appeared and guided them to marry in her house, transforming the wedding into a moving tribute to her memory.

With just around 40 guests comprising close family and friends, their “ghar ki shaadi” unfolded under gentle elegance. Conceptualised and executed by Pritie Jain of Bling Mushrooms, the decor featured layered whites and greenery, a deconstructed mandap adorned with fragrant blooms, and a striking black-and-white portrait of Smita Patil placed nearby, symbolizing her spiritual presence as they took their vows. Both bride and groom donned custom Tarun Tahiliani ensembles: Priya in a gold lehenga with crystal‑embellished corset paired with a veil and Prateik in a sherwani‑dhoti ensemble.

Yami Gautam and Aditya Dhar

Actor Yami Gautam and filmmaker Aditya Dhar celebrated their intimate wedding on June 4, 2021. The bride’s own farmhouse nestled in the serene hills of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh was the choice of venue for the pious ceremony. The two‑day celebration was understated, deliberate and eco‑conscious, the perfect reflection of their desire for authenticity. They exchanged vows beneath a towering deodhar tree, in front of a simple mandap adorned with gold-and-white décor accentuated by fresh marigold garlands and banana leaves. The theme channeled traditional Himachali aesthetics with natural, zero‑waste sensibility.

Yami wore her mother’s 33‑year‑old Banarasi silk sari and paired it with heirloom jewellery and a dupatta gifted by her grandmother. She even did her own bridal makeup, with kohl-lined eyes and a bold lip, while her sister styled her hair with a timeless bun and maang tikka.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s big day on June 23, 2024, was a heartfelt and intimate affair held at Sonakshi’s own sea‑facing home in Bandra, Mumbai. After a court marriage ceremony, the couple exchanged vows in the presence of only close family and friends, choosing closeness over grandeur.

The decor mirrored their refined, understated aesthetic. The interiors were dressed in an ivory-and-white palette, evoking serene elegance. Delicate floral arrangements in soft hues accented the setting, while personalized details including custom signage and ambient lighting, created a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere inside the residence. As a beautiful tribute to her mother Poonam Sinha, Sonakshi wore her wedding sari, a subtle cream-hued drape, from her big day. Zaheer opted for a clean white ensemble in keeping with the serene theme.

Vikrant Massey and Sheetal Thakur

Vikrant Massey and Sheetal Thakur tied the knot on February 2022 in an intimate, heartfelt celebration at Sheetal’s ancestral home in Shahatali, Himachal Pradesh. The destination also happens to be the groom’s hometown, making it a deliberate choice to honour family roots and ensure those who mattered most, particularly Sheetal’s 108-year-old grandmother who could be part of their day.

Set against the lush hills, the decor was thoughtfully organic and eco-conscious. The mandap stood before a foliage wall adorned with rattan and locally grown flowers, creating a naturally beautiful backdrop for their vows. Floral arrangements made from regionally sourced blossoms and banana leaves added texture and colour, while the traditional Himachali feast completed the atmospheric authenticity. The wedding attire mirrored this simplicity: Vikrant in a crisp white sherwani with a light pink turban, Sheetal in a contemporary red Anita Dongre lehenga and matching jewellery.

Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi

Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi’s wedding wasn’t just intimate, it was intentional. Held in the lush garden of Dia’s Bandra home, the ceremony reflected the actor’s commitment to sustainability and soulful celebration. The bride’s wedding outfit, too, was true to her ethos of eco-friendly choices. She opted for a red Banarasi sari by Raw Mango—reusable, timeless, and true to her ethos of conscious living. In marrying at home, she didn’t just celebrate love—she honoured authenticity, heritage, and the planet.

Set under a beloved mango tree, the open-air mandap came to life with locally sourced flowers, featuring mogra, rajnigandha, roses, baby’s breath, arranged in natural, rustic bunches. Designed by Aashna Saran of Aash Studio, the setting leaned into mindful minimalism with jute fabrics, brass plates, and plastic-free accents. Every detail was considered: bells hung on chairs to ring in blessings, candles flickered in vintage holders, and handwritten notes added a personal touch to each table setting.

Rhea Kapoor and Karan Boolani

Rhea Kapoor and Karan Boolani’s wedding on August 2021 was the antithesis of big fat Bollywood celebration. Held at Anil Kapoor’s sea-facing Juhu bungalow, the ceremony was steeped in familial warmth and meaningful details, proving that a home can be the most sacred venue of all. Rhea’s bridal look broke tradition in the most graceful way: an ivory Chanderi silk sari by Anamika Khanna, paired with a pearl-embroidered veil and heirloom pearl‑kundan jewellery by her mother Sunita Kapoor. Karan’s embroidered linen bandhgala by Kunal Rawal featured personal touches, including his and Rhea’s initials and their wedding date sewn inside.

The décor, done by Rani Pink Love, mirrored the pared-down yet personalised mood. Strings of soft lights framed the garden, white flowers like tuberoses, jasmine and roses spilled into every corner, lanterns flickered across the space for an ambient vibe, and the home that raised her became the backdrop to a new chapter.
