In various contexts, the word “vintage” can essay a number of meanings. With a storied legacy, monumental architecture and regency-inspired interior design, Old Sessions House personifies the word in all its glory. The property enjoys a dream location, nestled in London and overlooking over Clerkenwell Green that’s touted the city’s most vibrant urban villages. If you’re looking for a wedding straight out of a storybook, this is one to bookmark.
A walk in time
The iconic property first opened its doors in 1782, boasting Palladian-style building was grand, with a facade of solid Portland stone and lonic columns. Under the name of Middlesex Sessions House, it proudly stood as the nation’s largest courthouse during its heydays. Over the decades, Old Sessions House went through several change of guards, from serving as a publishing house to the headquarters of manufacturer of weighing machines. In 1994, it became a Grade II* listed building.
The iconic place eventually went through an extensive refurbishment. Feilden+Mawson were the project architect for the refurbishment, which aimed to retain its ageless qualities and introduce well considered, contemporary functions. Acrylicize was commissioned to create bespoke artworks in-house and curate works by over 20 artists for the former courthouse building.
Today, the past and the present coexist in the stripped walls and interior design language of the Old Sessions House. The three-storied space marries Victorian architecture with an exterior that mirrors the Roman Pantheon and the modern minimalism interior dotted with modern furnishings and eccentric décor. On entering, you’re welcomed by the atrium that’s awash in ample natural light through its arched windows along with 9-metre-high ceilings, a raised viewing gallery and original pine floors. Earthy tones, vaulted high ceilings, lime-washed brick walls and furniture placed informally can be found at this level. The first floor’s stellar central room is flanked by different spaces, while at the top of the Old Sessions House a south-facing private terrace provides magnificent panoramic views across London.
