Ever wonder what happens when a wedding specialist plans her own wedding? It begins with a list of things ‘the don’ts’ before ‘the dos’. This was just the case for bride Vedika Mohan, the creative director of the wedding planning and décor company, The Wedding Design Company, when it came to planning her own dream nuptials. Vedika, who has orchestrated the walk down the aisle for A-listers like Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh along with the engagement party of Parineeti Chopra and Raghav Chadha, tapped into her experience to curate her wedding that was as unique as her love story with fashion entrepreneur Omair Warsi.
The couple, who was “introduced to each other years after graduating school and university through common friends”, began dating after the groom slid into the bride’s DMs. After being in a serious relationship for years, the pair decided to solidify it by tying the knot in February 2024.
The Mixed-Faith Vision
The Hindu-Punjabi bride and Muslim groom wanted their union to transcend traditions and religions. It’s why they skipped conventional pheras and nikaah, and instead opted for a court wedding in their hometown of New Delhi. “Our wedding vision was simple and straightforward: a personalised celebration focused on us, breaking away from traditional norms. We let go of any ceremonial conduct, choosing a blend of all the celebratory and joyous aspects of a wedding. Our families enthusiastically embraced this idea. Surrounded by our tight-knit circle of loved ones, who have witnessed our journey both as individuals and as a couple, we marked this significant milestone together,” Vedika tells me.
The Unique Décor
When it came to the décor and design, it was as visually pleasing as they come. Vedika and her mother Vandana Mohan who is considered the doyenne of out-of-the-box celebrations along with the team at The Wedding Design Company brought the bride’s décor vision to life with unique themes for every event. From a Sitara Dhol night featuring lots of marigolds and rani pinks, to a glitz and glamorous sangeet night in the desert, it was a fairy tale come true. Each element was carefully curated. The Chintz Story theme for the reception lunch was a maximalist’s dream, channelled in the freshest colour palette—think shades of teal, lime green and lilac, making this affair a gorgeous pastel oasis. The setting was accented with glazed ceramic pots and vases, while the furniture was adorned with upholstery designed especially for the day—stripes, ikats and chintz complementing each other to bring about a new design perspective to contemporary India.
The Dhol Night
The couple commenced the wedding festivities with a Sitara-themed Dhol night in the capital. “Our Dhol Night simply meant celebrating true old-school, traditional style with abundant marigolds, twinkling lanterns and candles, velvets with gota patti and dher saara pyaar,” she says.
Vedika was a vision in burgundy embellished pants and blouse set paired with a scallop-shaped cape designed by Sureena Chowdhri, while makeup artist Ankit Malik brought her look to life. Omair dazzled in a black mirror work kurta set by Abha Batra for the evening replete with shimmer, shine and lots of music and dancing.
The Civil Ceremony In New Delhi
“We wanted it to be a ‘Ghar ki Shaadi’. Our wedding had no ceremonies or rituals. The thought behind this was to celebrate the two of us and no better way to have done that except from our home. Getting married from home was something that I’d always wanted to do and luckily for me, Omair had the same thought,” Vedika reveals.
Much like her ceremony, the bride made her wedding look truly her own. Giving done-to-death red lehengas, Vedika opted for a pale gold sari and accentuated it with her mother’s restored wedding dupatta draped as an odhni. To accessorise, too, she went with heirloom pieces—her mother’s wedding jewellery from 40 years ago that was redone slightly. She also paid homage to her North Indian heritage and roots by adorning herself with her grandmother and great grandmother’s bangles and cuff—layering the cross-cultural ceremony with profound meaning. The groom, too, went the sentimental route with a dark blue kurta complemented by a Nehru jacket and white pants, a gift from Vedika’s nani. Makeup artist Meera Sakhrani crafted a beautiful matte look.
The Lunch Among The Daises
The heartfelt wedding ceremony was followed by a scrumptious lunch for the friends and family, who came to celebrate the happy couple. FoodInc Catering by Yum Yum Tree curated a memorable meal for the occasion. The event was set in a home garden, decked up with an array and abundance of daisies to create a pastel paradise. Custom dragonflies adorned the wild daisy garden, while hand painted furniture further added its own special touch. Elements of customisation, from table mats, to upholstery, elevated the setting.
The Welcome Lunch In Jaisalmer
For the destination leg of the festivities, the couple chose the royal Suryagarh Palace as the venue of choice. Close friends and family were welcomed in Jaisalmer with a vibrant lunch. The bride opted for a fuss-free open-back baby pink blouse adorned with hand embroidery and playful tassels, complemented by matching pants featuring intricate embroidery designed by Payal Singhal. Makeup artist Pooja Khurana and hairstylist Archana Rautela worked their magic for her for all events in Rajasthan. Omair took pride in wearing a multicoloured brushstroke print shirt and matching blue pants from his own label Zazu.
The Vows In Jaisalmer
“Our inter-faith wedding was devoid of any traditional ceremonies like pheras or nikkah,” says Vedika about her thought-process of a modern marriage. Devoid of conventional religious rituals, Vedika and Omair’s agnostic vow exchange simply celebrated their commitment towards each other. The couple declared their love in the serene setting of the stepwell at the palatial property. “We customised mini tambourines and placed them on every seat for the guests to play after we exchanged our vows. The décor featured locally sourced diyas and candles. It was truly magical,” adds Vedika.
For the big day, the bride wore a long, embroidered ivory skirt and an embroidered ivory blouse with a matching long veil, custom-made by designer Seema Gujral featuring the couple’s initials ‘VOW’ paired with a stunning bespoke ruby choker and earrings.
The Kaleidoscope Lunch
A colourful lunch culminated the special occasion. Vedika donned a custom hot pink sharara set adorned with hand mirror work by Abhinav Mishra, while Omair sported a gradient orange and cream-colored Nehru jacket with a plain silk kurta and white pants from Nine Styles.
The Sangeet Night
“With the beautiful Suryagarh Jaisalmer as the backdrop, we opted for a ‘rustic luxury’ theme for the sangeet night. The flowerless décor combined earthen pots, varied dried grass and candles, adding sophistication. The colour palette of terracotta, rusts and emerald green contributed to an opulent start, and heartfelt dances by family and friends under the moonlight made the sangeet memorable.”
The couple’s friends and family enjoyed performing dances at their sangeet ceremony. In contrast to her humble wedding sari, Vedika put her fashion face forward for the evening in a dazzling custom bright red diamond-studded gown by Gaurav Gupta. Omair was handsomely attired in a custom-made tuxedo set by Abha Batra.
The Reception In New Delhi
The celebrations came to a close with a wedding reception in New Delhi for the extended family and friends who couldn’t make it for the destination affair. The couple who opted for an unpopular event style of sit-down lunch for the reception shared, “We both love day functions, especially outdoor ones. It worked out perfectly and beautifully for us, that our reception was a Sunday lunch at the Nandiya Gardens in ITC Maurya Delhi.”
Dolled up a custom silver corset paired with a lilac hand-embroidered cape and pearl embellished pants by Anamika Khanna and the perfect fresh flower-like makeup by Namrata Soni, Vedika captivated her guests. Omair, donning a custom outfit by Abha Batra, complemented his bride’s attire with a pastel purple gradient blazer, a matching kurta, and white pants, radiating style.
